Costa Teguise is the resort area of the municipality of Teguise, on Lanzarote's east coast, 15 km from Arrecife. Things to do in Costa Teguise are quickly summed up: three town beaches with calm water, the bay of Las Cucharas full of windsurf sails, a seasonal water park, an aquarium with a shark tunnel and a square designed by César Manrique that hosts a market three days a week.

Its big advantage over Playa Blanca or Puerto del Carmen is its position. You are a stone's throw from Arrecife and the north (Teguise, Famara, Haría, the Manrique sites). Its weak point is the trade wind, which makes windsurfers happy and summer afternoons on a towel a little less comfortable.

Costa Teguise beaches: Las Cucharas, Bastián and El Jablillo

Las Cucharas and El Jablillo are protected by breakwaters and Bastián is sheltered between stone walls, so the water is usually calm even when it is windy. None has a Blue Flag; to compare with the rest of the island, see the Lanzarote beaches guide.

Playa de Las Cucharas

The main beach: about 650 m of fine golden-brown sand, breakwaters that tame the waves and the best facilities in town. The northern end is the one for small children; the rest of the bay is for water sports, with several windsurf and dive schools on the promenade. Soap and shower gel are not allowed in the beach showers.

Playa Bastián and El Jablillo

Bastián is more secluded: golden-brown sand, stone walls, steps and gardens, with the promenade and bars right behind. El Jablillo has white sand and calm water behind a breakwater; this is where dive courses and try-dives take place. Both work well for a quick dip without getting in the car.

Windsurfing and water sports at Las Cucharas

Las Cucharas is Lanzarote's learn-to-windsurf bay. The trade wind blows from the north-east, cross-shore from the left, and the Surf Lanzarote school puts it "from March to the end of September"; in autumn and winter the wind is less frequent, which makes it a better time for beginners who want lighter air. There are at least four schools in the bay and the peak season runs from June to August.

As a guide, a taster session of about 2 hours costs around €70–90 and an 8–10-hour course €250–320; ask what is included before you pay.

If you would rather look underwater, Costa Teguise has its own options: a 2-hour guided snorkelling tour for all levels (from €50, rated 4.9 from 81 reviews), a small-group try-dive from €95 and a two-dive beginner trip from €145. For dive centres and prices elsewhere on the island, see the diving in Lanzarote and water sports guides.

Aquapark Costa Teguise: season, price and opening hours

Aquapark Costa Teguise is, by its own figures, the biggest water park on the island: 25 slides and 11 pools (see also our review of the park). But there are two things worth knowing before you promise it to the children:

  • It is seasonal: it opens from late March to early November and closes in winter. In April and May it usually closes on Tuesdays and Wednesdays; from June until closing it opens daily from 10:00 to 17:00.
  • The water is not heated: on a cool day or with a spring breeze, the pools feel cold.

A full-day ticket costs €28 (ages 13–64) and €19 for children aged 4 to 12 and over-65s; under-4s free. A half day from 14:00 is €20 and €16. Buying on the park's website gets you 8 % off, so booking direct is slightly cheaper than on the platforms.

Aquarium Lanzarote: price and what to expect

Aquarium Lanzarote is in the El Trébol shopping centre and opens daily from 10:00 to 18:00, last entry 17:15. It has 33 tanks and a central 500,000-litre oceanarium with sharks and an underwater tunnel, plus touch pools and a sea turtle rescue centre.

A visit takes around an hour. Adults €16, children aged 4 to 12 €11, over-65s €13 and under-4s free; the family ticket (2 adults and 2 children) costs €50, €4 less than buying separately. Buy on the aquarium's website or on the platforms at the same price. More in our Aquarium review.

It is a good short outing for a windy day, and the shark tank is a big hit. Against it: it is small for the price, some reviews criticise animal welfare, and the turtles in rehabilitation show their injuries, something to explain to children beforehand. You can also dive in the oceanarium with the sharks: €300 without a qualification and €250 with one, and a companion gets in free.

Pueblo Marinero and the Costa Teguise markets

The Pueblo Marinero is a square designed by César Manrique, ringed by bars, restaurants and shops, and it is the heart of the town's low-key nightlife: in the evenings several pubs have live music. Three municipal markets are held here:

Day Market Hours
Tuesday Farmers' market 09:00–14:00
Wednesday Craft market 18:00–22:00
Friday Costa Teguise market 17:00–22:00

The Cabildo's (island council's) tourism website gives different hours for the market (Wednesday and Friday, 17:00 to 20:00); the town council runs it, so check the Teguise markets page before you go. Friday evening makes a good free outing before dinner.

The big market in the area is the Sunday one in the Villa de Teguise, with a direct bus from here; read the Teguise market review for all the details.

Costa Teguise without a car: buses to Arrecife, Famara and the market

The Intercity Bus Lanzarote "guaguas" (buses; timetables at arrecifebus.com) serve Costa Teguise well:

  • Route 1 to Arrecife, home to the bus station from which every route on the island departs.
  • Route 3 to Puerto del Carmen and route 25 to Puerto Calero.
  • Route 31 to Caleta de Famara: on weekdays it leaves Hotel Salinas at 09:30, 11:00, 15:40 and 19:10; on Sundays there are six departures, the first at 10:00. It is the only direct bus link with Famara.
  • Route 11, Sundays only, to Teguise market: departures at 09:00, 09:30, 10:00, 10:30 and 11:00 from Hotel Salinas, Pueblo Marinero, Playa Bastián and Hotel Oasis (about 24 minutes); returning at 12:00, 12:30, 13:00, 13:15 and 14:00.

There is no direct route to the airport: take route 1 to Arrecife and change there to an airport route (22 or 23). Taxis have no published fixed fare; reckon on €32–47 from the airport. Bus fares are not published on the operator's website; with the Bono General (a €2 card) you save 10 %. More tips in the Lanzarote without a car guide.

Driving time without traffic, calculated with OSRM on OpenStreetMap. Add 20–30 % in summer and at rush hour; at Timanfaya the queue of cars at the gate can add a lot more.

  • The north and Manrique: Teguise, Haría, the Jardín de Cactus, Jameos del Agua and the Mirador del Río are all nearby. With a car, do it yourself following the northern route and the César Manrique route; without one, many group tours pick up in Costa Teguise.
  • La Graciosa: the ferry leaves from Órzola. Some boat trips, such as those by Líneas Romero, include a coach from Costa Teguise; all the options are in the La Graciosa guide.
  • Timanfaya: about 45 minutes away by car. Tickets are sold only online, in time slots and non-refundable; read the Timanfaya guide before choosing between driving and a tour.
  • Buggies: from Costa Teguise the routes run along tracks in the north; compare in the buggies guide.
