Aquarium Lanzarote: reviews, price and whether it is worth it

Aquarium Lanzarote works as a short visit: a good shark tank with a tunnel and turtles in rehabilitation, but one hour for €16 and some animal-welfare criticism. Fine for a windy day with children, not for half a day.

Our view in one sentence: Aquarium Lanzarote is a good hour on a windy day with children, as long as you know it is small and you are paying €16 for that hour. The ticket costs the same at the official ticket office, on GetYourGuide and on Tiqets, so the decision is more about whether it is worth going than where to buy.

  • High price for the time you spend inside
  • Some turtles on display have visible injuries: prepare young children
  • Reviews with strong criticism of animal welfare

What Aquarium Lanzarote offers

It is inside the El Trébol shopping centre in Costa Teguise and is run by a private company, Aquarium de Costa Teguise Lanzarote, S.L. According to the aquarium itself, it has 33 tanks with hundreds of marine species and more than a million litres of water in total. The centrepiece is the 500,000-litre Oceanarium, with sharks (nurse, blacktip, bamboo, zebra), eagle rays and mantas, moray eels and groupers, and a tunnel to see it from below.

The visit is rounded off by three touch tanks, a "rubbish aquarium" about waste in the sea, a piranha habitat and the sea turtle rehabilitation area: the turtles receive veterinary care and are released when they can be; those that cannot go back stay.

On one page the aquarium calls itself "the largest in the Canary Islands" and on another "one of the largest". We repeat neither. For opening hours, getting there and visit details, see the Lanzarote Aquarium guide.

Diving with sharks

The aquarium sells dives in the Oceanarium with the Aquatis Diving centre: 30 minutes in the tank, with insurance, equipment, a visit to the aquarium and free entry for one companion.

Option Price Total time
Uncertified (with pool practice) €300 150 min
Certified diver €250 120 min
With sea training €350 180 min

It runs Monday to Saturday from 09:00 to 15:00, never on Sundays, and must be booked at least 2 days ahead on the aquarium's diving page. If you are certified, bring your card: it saves you €50. According to the aquarium, it is the only one in Spain where you can dive with sharks without certification.

For diving in the open sea rather than a tank, see the Lanzarote diving guide.

What travellers say

On GetYourGuide the ticket is rated 4.3 out of 5 from 568 reviews and on Tiqets 4.3 from 179: a decent score, not a brilliant one. On Tripadvisor these themes recur:

  • For: the viewing angles on the shark tank, the centre's role as a refuge for rescued animals, and that it is a short, affordable visit for an afternoon.
  • Against: that it is small (30 to 60 minutes), that the display tanks are small, and that the price weighs heavily for the time you spend inside.
  • Animal welfare: some reviews are very harsh, with titles accusing the aquarium of poor conditions for the animals and advising people not to go. Others highlight the turtle rehabilitation. It is an aquarium with captive animals: some see it as education and rescue, others as something they do not want to pay for.
  • Shark diving: those who have done it praise the staff's professionalism.
