Rancho Texas Lanzarote Park is the island's big theme park: a zoo with a Wild West setting, four types of show a day and Aqua Rancho, with slides and heated pools included in the ticket. It is in Puerto del Carmen, four minutes' drive from the centre.

The theme is not a whim. The park commemorates the 55 Canary Islanders, 43 of them from Lanzarote, who founded San Antonio (Texas) in 1731. For a family it is a full day out; for a couple without children, it is probably not worth it. And before you buy: the dolphins live in captivity, and what is sold as "swimming with dolphins" is a paid interaction in their pool.

Rancho Texas ticket prices

Rate Price

Child aged 3 to 12 €30
Over 65 €30
Ages 0 to 2 free

Two adults and two children pay €150. Canary Islands residents pay almost half.

Tickets on Tiqets or the official website

There is no Rancho Texas ticket on GetYourGuide. The big platform that sells it is Tiqets, at the same price as the park, €45, rated 4.7 out of 5 from more than 300 reviews. The real advantage of buying your ticket on Tiqets is cancellation: you can cancel up to 23:59 the day before your visit.

On the official website the change conditions differ from page to page (valid for a year, non-refundable, free changes with 72 hours' notice, depending on where you look), so read the ones for your purchase before paying. It accepts cards, Bizum, PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay.

Tiqets also sells combos with a 5% discount: Rancho Texas + Aqualava for €71.25 instead of €75, or Rancho Texas + Aquarium Lanzarote for €57.95 instead of €61. A small saving, but free if you were going to both anyway. More on the platform in our Tiqets review.

Opening times and shows: how to plan the day

The park opens every day of the year from 09:30 to 17:30. The pools run from 09:30 to 17:00, but the Aqua Rancho slides only open from 12:30 to 17:00. That is the key to planning: animals and shows in the morning, water after lunch.

Each show lasts 15 to 20 minutes. Times published by the park:

Show Summer (20 Jun – 10 Sep) Rest of the year (11 Sep – 19 Jun)
Dolphins 11:30 · 13:45 11:30 · 13:45
Birds of prey 11:30 · 13:00 · 15:00 13:00 · 15:00
Macaws and cockatoos 10:30 · 12:30 · 13:30 · 16:00 10:45 · 13:30 · 16:00
Sea lions 11:30 · 13:00 · 14:30 12:30 · 14:30

You enter the dolphin show through a 4K projection room, the "Interactive Environmental Cave": arrive a few minutes early.

A typical day outside peak season

  1. Go in at 09:30 and walk round the zoo at your own pace while it is cool.
  2. Macaws at 10:45 and dolphins at 11:30.
  3. Sea lions at 12:30 and an early lunch.
  4. Birds of prey at 13:00 or 15:00.
  5. Aqua Rancho slides from 12:30 until closing at 17:00.

You can leave and come back in on the same day if you tell the ticket office.

The zoo animals

The list is longer than many people expect: bottlenose dolphins, sea lions, Humboldt penguins, a white tiger, lynx, bison, a Komodo dragon, Nile crocodile, otters, flamingos, an Andean condor, a bald eagle, lots of macaws and cockatoos, Aldabra giant tortoises, fallow deer, donkeys and horses.

It is not a safari: you walk round on foot, between enclosures. Visitor reviews repeatedly praise the gardens, the dolphin and sea lion shows and the keepers' friendliness. The most common complaints are the small enclosures for the big cats and the bison, and some visitors' discomfort at seeing dolphins in pools.

Aqua Rancho, the included water park

Aqua Rancho turns the visit into a full day: eight slides, from the Texas Bowl to the Lasso Loop, and eight areas of pools and children's play.

The most useful detail: the pools are heated with geothermal and solar energy. Between November and March, when the Aquapark in Costa Teguise is closed, Aqua Rancho and Aqualava are the island's two water parks with heated water. From Puerto del Carmen, Aqua Rancho is the closest option.

It is an add-on to the zoo rather than a big water park, but a serious add-on. Locker keys are available from the pool shop.

Dolphins at Rancho Texas: what is actually on offer

The dolphins at Rancho Texas are bottlenose dolphins in captivity; according to resellers, four of them, which arrived in 2016 from the Duisburg and Nuremberg zoos. Their show is included in the standard ticket. Separately, the park sells three paid activities, which are worth booking ahead in July and August:

  • Dolphin interaction: you get into the pool with the dolphins.
  • Sea lion interaction: the same, in the water with sea lions.
  • Trainer for a day: dolphin show, behind-the-scenes visit and taking part in feeding and training the dolphins and penguins.

The park does not publish the price of the interaction outside its booking process. Resellers sell it for about €195 per adult and €180 per child with entry included, with the water roughly at waist height, a minimum height of 110 cm and a minimum age of 6 or 7 depending on the seller; children must be with an adult who also takes part. Confirm these conditions when you book.

On the debate: Spanish law currently allows dolphins in licensed zoos, and organisations such as PACMA and Mares No Muros are calling for dolphinariums to be banned. Some visitors love the interaction and others consider it money wasted.

Country Night: the Wild West evening

On Tuesdays and Fridays the park opens in the evening for Country Night: doors at 18:30, finishing around 22:45. It includes a barbecue buffet (ribs and chicken), unlimited beer, sangria and soft drinks, a cowboy parade, dancing, cabaret, a lasso and whip show, and pony rides for the children. There are special editions for Halloween, Christmas and New Year's Eve.

The official price only appears when you book on the park's website; resellers advertise it at around €62 per adult and €40 per child. It is a family dinner show; for a different kind of night out, see Lanzarote for adults. Programme on the Country Night page.

How to get to Rancho Texas: transfer, local bus and car

Park transfer. From Puerto del Carmen it is free every day. From Costa Teguise it costs €6 per person and from Playa Blanca €7, also daily. You book it as an extra step when buying in the official shop; if you buy your ticket elsewhere, ask the park how to add it. Watch the maths: a family of four from Playa Blanca pays €28 for the transfer.

Guagua (local bus). Line 2 (Arrecife–Puerto del Carmen) stops at San Antonio, about 15 minutes' walk away. Line 161, the one from Playa Blanca, stops at Rambla Islas Canarias, about 10 minutes on foot. Timetables at arrecifebus.com. More ideas in our guide to Lanzarote without a car.

Car. Free parking, with electric car chargers.

Is Rancho Texas worth it?

For

  • Zoo, shows and water park on a single ticket
  • Heated pools, good in winter too
  • Free transfer from Puerto del Carmen
  • Accessible, with shade at the shows

Against

  • Dolphins and big cats in captivity, in enclosures some find small
  • €45 per adult, with no group discount
  • Slides only from 12:30
  • Crowded on summer Mondays and Thursdays

For families with children aged 3 to 12 staying in Puerto del Carmen, it is a very complete park day for the money: the animals, the shows and the warm water justify the €45. If you only want water, look at Aqualava in Playa Blanca or, from late March to early November, the Aquapark in Costa Teguise, which has more slides; if animals in captivity make you uncomfortable, skip it and find other ideas in Lanzarote with kids. Our assessment of the park as a company is in the Rancho Texas review.
