La Geria, in Lanzarote, is the island's wine landscape: thousands of pits dug into black volcanic ash, each with its own vine and its own crescent-shaped stone wall. Driving through it on the LZ-30 costs nothing. What you pay for are the winery visits and tastings, from €15 to €95 per person depending on what is included. Here are the opening hours, prices and how to taste without having to drive afterwards.

What La Geria is and why the wine is so different

La Geria is a protected landscape of 5,255 hectares spread across Tías, San Bartolomé, Yaiza, Tinajo and Teguise, covered in volcanic ash. That layer of lapilli, known locally as picón, can be up to 3 metres thick. To reach the fertile soil underneath, farmers dig funnel-shaped pits (hoyos) and plant a single vine at the bottom. That is why the vines are so far apart and yields are low.

Around each pit stands a semicircular stone wall, the zoco, which shelters the plant from the trade winds. In Tinajo and Haría vines are also grown in trenches (zanjas), another answer to the same problem. The harvest is done by hand and many vines are 30 to 50 years old.

Phylloxera, the vine pest, never reached the Canaries, so the vines grow on their own roots, ungrafted. The signature grape is Malvasía Volcánica, unique to Lanzarote; Listán Negro, Listán Blanco, Vijariego Blanco and Moscatel are grown too. The wines carry the Lanzarote Denominación de Origen, granted in 1993.

The landscape is not guaranteed to last: of about 1,368 hectares under vine, around 15% has been abandoned, and the Canary Islands Government has set aside €750,000 to halt the decline. Buying local wine and visiting the wineries directly helps keep the vines going.

How to get to La Geria and whether it is free

The LZ-30 road between Uga and Mozaga is the wine route: it crosses La Geria from end to end, and the main wineries sit right on the road, 1 to 5 km apart. According to El Grifo, its winery is about 10 minutes from Puerto del Carmen (LZ-504, then LZ-30) and about 20 from Arrecife.

Driving time without traffic, calculated with OSRM on OpenStreetMap. Add 20–30 % in summer and at rush hour; at Timanfaya the queue of cars at the gate can add a lot more.

No public bus (guagua) reaches the wineries. Without a car, the options are a taxi or a tour with transfers; we explain it in Lanzarote without a car.

Bodega La Geria

Founded in 1896 and owned by the Melián family since 1993, it is on the La Geria road at km 19, in Yaiza. Its guided visit is the cheapest in the area: €15 with three wines, 50 minutes between vineyard and cellar, and under-15s go free. Slots go on sale only 12 days in advance: usually at 11:30, 16:00 and 17:15, some days at 15:00 and on Saturdays at 12:45 as well. Groups of more than 8 book by email.

It is not accessible for people with walking difficulties, and pushchairs are not allowed during the visit (they will look after them for you). On the same estate is Taberna La Cepa, open 09:00 to 18:00 with food until 16:30; it is small, so book on 828 180 501. Calendar and bookings on the Bodega La Geria website. Read our review of Bodega La Geria.

Bodegas Rubicón

The estate and shop are free to enter, every day from 10:00 to 19:00, and you can taste in the shop without booking. The winery traces its origins to 1570, as a farmstead. The "Entre Muros y Viñedos Centenarios" visit costs €22 (€5 for 11 to 17-year-olds), lasts 45 minutes and includes two wines and cheese; it runs daily at 13:30 with a minimum of 6 people. "El Legado Rubicón" costs €40 and runs on Mondays and Fridays at 12:00.

Its restaurant is open 11:00 to 20:00 and takes no reservations: arrive before 13:00. More on the Rubicón website.

Stratvs

In Uga, on the Arrecife–Yaiza road at km 21. Open every day, with visits at 10:30, 12:00, 13:30 and 16:00. "En torno al vino" (All about wine) costs €25, lasts an hour and includes three wines with cheeses from the Finca de Uga. On Saturdays there is also a tasting with live music. Bookings via the Stratvs calendar.

Vulcano and Los Bermejos

Vulcano is not in La Geria but in Tías village. Its vineyard and tasting tour costs €59, lasts about 3 hours, takes a maximum of 8 people aged 12 and over (under-18s get soft drinks) and runs only once a month, starting at 10:00.

Los Bermejos has suspended guided visits until further notice because the winery is relocating; the tasting terrace and shop remain open. Check the situation on its website before you go.

El Grifo: visit and tasting prices

El Grifo is on the LZ-30 at km 11 (San Bartolomé), 3 km from the Monumento al Campesino. Its wine press is dated 1775 by a founding inscription, and the winery describes itself as the oldest in the Canaries and one of the ten oldest in Spain. You enter beside César Manrique's griffin sculpture, which you can see in context in our guide to César Manrique.

The key point: visits are Monday to Friday only, from 10:00 to 17:15 (last entry). On Saturdays, from 13:00, tastings and sales move to its restaurant in Mozaga, at Calle Malva 8. The options:

  • Wine museum audio guide: €15, 45 minutes, 2 wines; free up to age 17; in five languages.
  • Selected wines tasting: €30, 35 minutes, 5 wines, adults only, no tour.
  • Wine Lovers: €50, 2 hours, a walk through the vineyard of century-old vines, the museum, family house and library, 6 wines with Canarian cheeses; maximum 12 people, adults only.
  • Wine Lovers & Gastronomy: €95, the same visit plus a tasting menu at the Mozaga restaurant.

El Grifo's tastings are for adults, though alcohol-free alternatives are offered. The Wine Lovers visit costs the same booked on the winery's website as on GetYourGuide or Tiqets:

If you want to sleep among the vines, El Grifo has a 12-room hotel in an 18th-century farmhouse in Mozaga, about 5 minutes from the winery. More in our El Grifo review.

Wine tasting in Lanzarote without driving

This is the part almost nobody explains: the wineries are only a few kilometres apart, but whoever is driving cannot taste at three of them. Spain's general limit is 0.5 g/l in the blood or 0.25 mg/l in exhaled breath; for novice drivers (under two years with a licence) and professional drivers it drops to 0.15 mg/l, which in practice means not drinking at all. Fines are €500 or €1,000 with penalty points, and above 0.60 mg/l it is a criminal offence. Details on the DGT website (Spain's traffic authority).

Sensible options:

  • Have someone who isn't tasting drive, and ask for the wineries' alcohol-free alternatives.
  • Visit just one winery, share glasses, and buy bottles for the evening.
  • A tour with transfers or a walk with hotel pick-up: the way to taste in peace.

For an afternoon as a couple, the sunset vineyard tour (from €26) works very well; more ideas in Lanzarote for couples.

La Geria on foot, by bike or by buggy

Guided walks through La Geria (from €47, with pick-up) take in vineyards and volcanic cones and finish with wine. On your own, Volcán del Cuervo is very close, with parking on the LZ-56 near Masdache: an easy walk that goes into the crater and pairs well with a winery the same morning. More routes in hiking in Lanzarote.

By bike, be warned: Lanzarote is not flat and the wind is in charge. Under the current rules, helmets are compulsory on interurban roads, without the old exemptions for heat or steep climbs. The e-bike tour through craters and vineyards costs from €124; hire and routes in cycling in Lanzarote. Some buggy tours from Puerto Calero stop at a La Geria winery: whoever drives the buggy shouldn't taste, because the alcohol limits also apply on the road sections. See buggies in Lanzarote and our Buggies Lanzarote review.

If you are combining it with Timanfaya, there are Timanfaya and La Geria tours from €63.

When to go: harvest and the Wine Festival

  • Harvest: July to September, depending on the year. The most photogenic time. In winter the vines are bare and the landscape turns almost monochrome.
  • Lanzarote Wine Run and Wine Festival: every year in mid-June, a race through La Geria and a wine fair in Uga with around 17 wineries taking part.
  • Saborea Lanzarote: a food and wine festival in Teguise in late November.
  • Weekends: El Grifo does no visits; plan Saturday around Bodega La Geria, Rubicón and Stratvs.
