Our view in one sentence: Bodegas El Grifo is the winery we recommend for a first taste of Lanzarote wine, especially on the €50 Wine Lovers tour, as long as you can go on a weekday. That tour costs the same booked on its website as on GetYourGuide.

What El Grifo offers

El Grifo is on the LZ-30 road at kilometre 11, in the municipality of San Bartolomé, 3 km from the Monumento al Campesino. You enter past the EL GRIFO bird monument, a work by César Manrique. Since 1880 it has belonged to the descendants of Manuel García Durán, the third owning family; the wine press bears the date 1775, which appeared in an inscription during the 1986 restoration. It pioneered bottling wine in the Canary Islands (1935) and today gets 60% of its energy from solar panels.

The winery bills itself as "the oldest winery in the Canary Islands" and one of the ten oldest in Spain. Those are its own claims; nor is it the oldest estate in La Geria, since Bodegas Rubicón traces its origins to 1570.

The experiences, according to its official website:

There are alcohol-free alternatives for non-drinkers. Pets are not allowed in, though they can go to the outdoor wine bar. To understand the landscape of pits and stone walls you will see around you, read our guide to La Geria and its wineries.

Hotel and restaurant

El Grifo now has a 12-room hotel in a late-18th-century family farmhouse in Mozaga, about 5 minutes from the winery, with a restaurant (hotel information). The EL GRIFO restaurant in Mozaga (Calle Malva 8) is also where the Saturday tasting and sales take place, from 13:00.

Opening hours: weekdays only

Visits and experiences run Monday to Friday, 10:00 to 17:15 (last entry). The shop and wine bar open Monday to Friday 10:00 to 18:30 according to the contact page; the experiences page says until 18:00, so do not count on the last half hour. On Saturdays there are no visits at the winery, only tasting and sales at the Mozaga restaurant from 13:00.

If your only free day is Saturday or Sunday, Rubicón, Stratvs and Bodega La Geria open daily.

If you do not want to drive, GetYourGuide's "3 wineries" tour (€89, maximum 8 people, with transfer) solves the car problem; check the listing for which wineries it includes before booking if you want El Grifo to be one of them.

What travellers say

The Wine Lovers tour is rated 4.9 out of 5 from 371 reviews on GetYourGuide, one of the highest scores among the island's wine excursions; on Tiqets there are only 3 reviews (5.0). What the figures say: people who do the long tour come away very happy, and the small-group format (maximum 12) helps.
