Bike hire in Lanzarote works well if you plan it a few days ahead. The shops in Playa Blanca, Costa Teguise and Puerto del Carmen have everything from €9 city bikes to top-end road bikes, but almost none of them will rent for a single day online. And anyone expecting a flat island finds the opposite: the IRONMAN Lanzarote bike leg packs 2,550 m of climbing into 180 km.

If you just want a morning pedalling among the volcanoes, an e-bike tour takes care of the hills, the wind and the logistics. If you are coming to train, here are the shops, prices and the rules that changed on 1 October.

Bike hire in Playa Blanca

Papagayo Bike has its main shop at Los Bebederos 13 and a desk at the Hotel Mynd Yaiza (Calle Janubio 3), tel. +34 928 349 861. From July to April it opens Monday to Saturday 09:00–17:00 and Sundays 09:00–14:00; in May and June, 09:00–13:00. Planet Bikes is in the CC El Faro shopping centre (Calle Lanzarote, unit 2), tel. +34 608 236 926, Monday to Saturday 09:30–12:30 and 17:00–18:00.

From Playa Blanca the obvious ride is out to the Papagayo beaches. Cars pay €3 at the entrance barrier, but bikes and walkers get in free. Details of each cove in our guide to Lanzarote's beaches.

Bike hire in Costa Teguise and Puerto del Carmen

In Costa Teguise, Planet Bikes is on the Paseo Marítimo Las Cucharas, unit 5 (tel. +34 685 148 888, daily 09:00–13:30 and 15:30–18:00), and Papagayo Bike has desks at the Sands Beach Resort and the Radisson Blu.

Puerto del Carmen is the base for road bikes: Free Motion (tel. +34 928 777 479) rents everything from a €24 BH to an €80-a-day S-Works Tarmac, and CCT hands over its bikes there, with no delivery service. If your hotel is elsewhere, Planet Bikes will deliver on request.

E-bike tours through the volcanoes

For most visitors this is the best option: an electric bike, a guide, a planned route and no three-day rental to book. Tours on GetYourGuide start from €119 per person:

  • Volcanic craters and the vineyards of La Geria, 4 hours, from €124, rated 4.9 from more than 150 reviews.
  • Parque Natural de los Volcanes, 3.5 hours, from €119. It rides through the natural park, not inside Timanfaya National Park, where you cannot ride freely; the Montañas del Fuego visit is separate (see Timanfaya).
  • Southern route, 3.5 hours, from €119.
  • North to south, 5.5 hours, from €172.

Papagayo Bike runs group rides from €80: e-bike on Mondays, MTB on Wednesdays and road on Fridays, 3 to 5 hours, with transfer, bike, helmet and lunch. Private rides from €90 per person.

Road cycling in Lanzarote: hills and wind

Lanzarote is not flat. Only the seafront promenades in the resorts are. The IRONMAN bike leg is 180.2 km with 2,550 m of climbing, and the routes Free Motion suggests from Puerto del Carmen run from 71 to 108 km, the longest with 1,914 m of ascent:

Route from Puerto del Carmen Distance
Mancha Blanca – El Golfo – Tías 83.9 km
San Bartolomé – Caleta de Famara – La Santa 71 km
Timanfaya – Montaña del Fuego – La Santa 73.9 km
Tías – Teguise – Tabayesco 91.7 km
MTB: the north from Teguise 64.3 km

The classic climbs feature in the Vuelta Ciclista a Lanzarote: Mirador del Río (8.5 km, +310 m), Timanfaya (12.7 km, +220 m) and Femés (5.3 km, +170 m). But what wears you out most is the wind. The trade wind blows from the north-east and is more frequent in summer than in winter, so ride the headwind stretches in the morning. Month-by-month figures in Lanzarote weather.

IRONMAN and Club La Santa

IRONMAN Lanzarote has been held since 1992, in mid-May. Club La Santa, the sports resort at La Santa (Tinajo), organised it for 34 years; from the next edition it is run directly by The IRONMAN Group, based in Puerto del Carmen. Club La Santa still runs the Vuelta Ciclista a Lanzarote, its triathlon and the 4 Stage MTB Race. Bus ("guagua") route 16 links Arrecife with La Santa.

Helmets compulsory since 1 October 2026

In Spain, cyclists and their passengers must wear an approved, fastened helmet on roads outside towns, and under-16s on all roads. Since 1 October 2026, the new Article 118 of the General Traffic Regulations no longer includes the exceptions many guides still quote: long climbs, heat or medical reasons. There are now no exceptions outside towns.

At night or in poor visibility outside towns, you also need at least one light or reflective item visible from 150 m. The text is in the BOE (Spain's official gazette): https://www.boe.es/buscar/act.php?id=BOE-A-2003-23514

Cycling on La Graciosa

On La Graciosa you get around on foot, by bike or by licensed 4x4 taxi, and according to the island's tourism website the beaches are about 45 minutes away by bike. La Graciosa Bike (Avenida Virgen del Mar 77, Caleta de Sebo, WhatsApp +34 692 411 616) rents MTBs at €10 a day, electric MTBs or electric fat bikes at €25 and an e-fat-bike for two adults at €40, with helmet and assistance included. It has child seats and trailers. Website: https://www.lagraciosabike.com/

On GetYourGuide, MTB hire on the island starts from €15; booking with the shop by WhatsApp is cheaper. Bikes travel free on the ferry from Órzola with Líneas Romero and Biosfera Express.

Bikes and buses: what you need to know

On Intercity Bus Lanzarote buses, bikes go only in the luggage hold, one per person and if there is room, "never inside" the bus (https://arrecifebus.com/atencion-al-cliente/). Do not count on the bus as a rescue if your legs give out halfway. More transport options in Lanzarote without a car.

How much does bike hire cost in Lanzarote?

From €9 a day for a city bike, €19–50 for a road bike and €24–50 for an e-bike. Top-end bikes reach €80–99. At Papagayo Bike the daily rate drops from 3 days.

Can you hire a bike for just one day in Lanzarote?

Rarely online: Papagayo Bike requires 2 days, Free Motion and CCT 3, and Planet Bikes 4 days' notice. Phone the shop for a single day; otherwise, a half-day e-bike tour is the alternative.

Where can I hire an e-bike in Lanzarote?

Planet Bikes and Papagayo Bike in Playa Blanca and Costa Teguise, and Free Motion and CCT in Puerto del Carmen, from €24 a day. On La Graciosa, La Graciosa Bike at €25.

Are bike helmets compulsory in Lanzarote?

Yes, for everyone on roads outside towns and on all roads for under-16s. Since 1 October 2026 there is no longer an exception for climbs, heat or medical reasons.

Is Lanzarote good for cycling?

For riders with strong legs, yes: the IRONMAN course climbs 2,550 m in 180 km. For an easy ride, choose an e-bike or the seafront promenades along the coast.
