Aquarium Lanzarote (Acuario de Lanzarote) is inside the El Trébol shopping centre in Costa Teguise. It is a short, well-run visit: 33 tanks with hundreds of marine species, a large central tank with sharks and rays that you see from a tunnel, and a sea turtle rescue area.

It is our answer for a windy or cloudy day, or for children who cannot face another long excursion. It is not a big half-day aquarium: allow an hour and expect no more. If you are coming from Playa Blanca, it is about 45 minutes by car, so make the trip worthwhile by combining it with something else in Costa Teguise.

Opening times and how long it takes

It opens every day from 10:00 to 18:00, with last entry at 17:15. The aquarium itself reckons on an hour's visit; visitors talk of 30 to 60 minutes, depending on how long you linger in front of the shark tank.

That makes it a good late-afternoon plan after the beach, or a stop on a bad-weather day. It will not fill a whole day: pair it with something else from the list below.

What to see: the 33 tanks, the tunnel and the sharks

  • The Oceanarium, the 500,000-litre central tank, with an underwater tunnel. This is where the sharks are: nurse sharks, grey sharks, blacktips, bamboo and zebra sharks, plus mantas and eagle rays. In total the aquarium holds more than a million litres of water.
  • Three touch tanks, where children can touch sea urchins and sea cucumbers.
  • Moray eels, groupers and clownfish, among other species.
  • The "rubbish aquarium", a tank showing how pollution reaches the sea.
  • An Amazon habitat with piranhas, a recent addition.
  • Sea turtles in recovery: the aquarium treats them with vets and returns them to the sea when it can; those that cannot go back stay.

The aquarium describes itself as "the largest in the Canary Islands" on one page and as "one of the largest" on another. Take that as advertising: what matters is that you can see it properly in an hour.

Diving with sharks at the aquarium

The star activity is diving in the Oceanarium with the Aquatis Diving centre. It includes insurance, equipment, the aquarium visit and free entry for one companion. You get 30 minutes inside the tank.

Option Total duration Price
No certification (with a practice session in the pool first) 150 min €300
Certified divers 120 min €250
With diving training in the sea 180 min €350

It runs Monday to Saturday from 09:00 to 15:00, never on Sundays, and you need to book at least two days ahead. If you are certified, bring your card: you save €50. The minimum age is unclear (the website says 8 on one page and 12 on another), so confirm it before you pay. The aquarium presents this dive as the only one in Spain where you can dive with sharks without certification. Information and bookings on the aquarium's diving page.

If you would rather dive in the sea, see our guide to diving in Lanzarote.

Plan for a rainy or windy day in Costa Teguise

Costa Teguise has the best options for a non-beach day with children:

  • Aquarium in the morning (one hour).
  • Aquapark in season, which has a half-day ticket from 14:00. Note: its pools are not heated and on a cool day the water is cold.
  • Pueblo Marinero market: farmers' market on Tuesday mornings, flea market on Friday evenings. More in our Costa Teguise guide.

If you want warm water in winter, the heated pools are at Rancho Texas in Puerto del Carmen and at Aqualava in Playa Blanca. More ideas in Lanzarote with kids.

Reviews: the good and the bad

For

  • The shark tank is easy to see from several angles
  • Short, cheap and easy to fit into any day
  • A genuine role in turtle rescue

Against

  • Small: 30 to 60 minutes
  • Many of the display tanks are small
  • Some reviews criticise animal welfare

Visitor reviews keep coming back to two points: the shark tank is worth the visit, and the rest is small for the price. There are also some very critical reviews about animal welfare. For €16 and an hour, we think it is a good stop with children if you are already in Costa Teguise; it is not worth a 45-minute drive from Playa Blanca. Our view of the aquarium as a company is in the Aquarium Lanzarote review.
