La Graciosa is the easiest escape from Lanzarote: a short ferry from Órzola, a village of sand streets and beaches you reach by bike or on foot. This La Graciosa guide tells you which boat to take, how not to get stranded because of your return ticket, which beach is good for swimming (and which is not) and whether it pays to go independently or on a catamaran.

What La Graciosa is: island, village and nature park

Since the Canary Islands Statute of Autonomy (Organic Law 1/2018), La Graciosa has been an island of the archipelago in law (article 4.1). It has no Cabildo (island council): the Statute leaves it "administratively attached" to Lanzarote, and it belongs to the municipality of Teguise. Hence the nickname "the eighth island".

It has around 700–750 registered residents and two settlements. Caleta de Sebo is the port and the village: shops, restaurants and bike hire. Casas de Pedro Barba, about 6 km away, is a cluster of holiday homes with no services. Outside the two villages the land belongs to the State and is managed by the Organismo Autónomo Parques Nacionales (the national parks agency).

Lanzarote's tourist office describes it as probably one of the few places in Europe with no tarmac roads: streets and tracks are sand and dirt. The highest point, Agujas Grandes, is around 266 m, so routes are almost flat, although the sand is tiring. It is not empty: Caleta de Sebo handled more than 235,000 passengers in a single six-month period, and around 400 cars use its tracks.

How to get to La Graciosa from Lanzarote

Everything goes through Órzola, the village at the northern tip of Lanzarote. Both scheduled ferries to Caleta de Sebo leave from there. If you are staying in the south, allow for the drive up north.

Driving time without traffic, calculated with OSRM on OpenStreetMap. Add 20–30 % in summer and at rush hour; at Timanfaya the queue of cars at the gate can add a lot more.

By car: parking in Órzola

Visitors cannot take their car on the ferry. There is no pay car park listed in Órzola: you park for free on the street, which fills up early in high season. Líneas Romero has its own car park only for passengers holding a return ticket with them, and Biosfera Express advertises private parking. The "free parking" in GetYourGuide listings is exactly that: the ferry company's car park.

By guagua (bus): line 9 Arrecife – Órzola

Intercity Bus Lanzarote's line 9 guagua (the local word for bus) leaves Arrecife bus station, calls at Arrieta, Punta Mujeres and Jameos del Agua and takes about 55 minutes. It runs only five times a day, does not serve Costa Teguise and the fare is not published (https://arrecifebus.com/lineas/9-arrecife-orzola/). Departures from Arrecife: 07:20, 10:15, 11:30, 15:30 and 17:00. Departures from Órzola: 08:40, 11:40, 13:10, 16:40 and 18:10.

How to get to La Graciosa by bus

  1. Take the 10:15 number 9 from Arrecife; it reaches Órzola at around 11:10.
  2. Board the 11:30 Biosfera or the 12:00 Romero.
  3. Come back on a boat leaving La Graciosa at 17:30 at the latest.
  4. The last bus leaves Órzola at 18:10; if you miss it, there is nothing until the next day.

More combinations in the guide to Lanzarote without a car. From the airport, Líneas Romero offers a shared transfer from Terminal 2 to Órzola, only with its return ferry and booked before 18:00 the day before; it does not publish the price (https://www.lineasromero.com/en/transfers).

La Graciosa ferry: Romero and Biosfera times and prices

Two family-run companies from the island itself operate the crossing, Líneas Romero and Biosfera Express, in about 25 minutes (Biosfera's booking system says 30).

Romero or Biosfera: the return ties you to one company

The catch hardly anyone mentions: a return ticket is only valid on boats run by the company that sold it. Buy Romero and you come back on a Romero, even if the Biosfera leaves ten minutes earlier. Choose by the last boat back:

  • Biosfera Express: last boat from La Graciosa at 18:30 every day of its published timetable; it does not publish a separate winter timetable, so confirm when you book.
  • Líneas Romero: 19:00 in summer (until 25 October), 18:00 on 26 October and 17:00 from 27 October.

The other difference is changes. Biosfera lets you change date and time free as often as you like (subject to availability) and cancel at no cost up to 24 hours before. Romero sells open tickets, so if you miss your boat you get on the next one, but it charges 100% if you cancel less than 24 hours ahead; boarding closes 10 minutes before departure. In-depth reviews on Líneas Romero and Biosfera Express.

Book with the ferry company or on GetYourGuide?

The price is the same, €29, at the ticket office, on the operator's website, on GetYourGuide and on Tiqets. GetYourGuide adds free cancellation up to 24 hours before and pay-later, which beats Romero's own terms. Romero's ferry is rated 4.7 out of 5 there from more than 1,100 reviews.

Getting around La Graciosa: bike, 4x4 taxi or on foot

There is no tarmac and no hire cars. What you choose decides which beach you can reach.

By bike. La Graciosa Bike (Avenida Virgen del Mar 77, Caleta de Sebo; WhatsApp +34 692 411 616) hires out mountain bikes for €10 a day, electric mountain bikes or electric fat bikes for €25 and an electric tandem for two adults for €40, with helmet and roadside assistance included, plus child seats and trailers (https://www.lagraciosabike.com/). The beaches are about 45 minutes' pedalling away. On GetYourGuide rentals start at €15 (mountain) and €20 (electric): booking by WhatsApp works out the same or cheaper. More in the guide to cycling in Lanzarote.

By 4x4 taxi. Taxis wait at the quay and all charge the same: the north-island loop (about 1.5 h, taking in Las Conchas, the Caletón de los Arcos, Lambra and Pedro Barba) costs €60 for two and €30 per extra person; transfers to a single beach from €10 per person. There are few licences: at Easter and in summer, book ahead (https://www.visitlagraciosa.com/en/4x4-rental-la-graciosa/). Three people pay €30 each, less than the €40 per person of the cheapest 4x4 tour on GetYourGuide.

On foot. Pedro Barba and Montaña Amarilla are about 6 km from Caleta de Sebo; Las Conchas between 5 and 7.5 km depending on the path (1 h 10 min to 2 h). There is no shade: take plenty of water and set off early.

La Graciosa beaches, one by one

There is no official information on lifeguards: assume there are none. Outside the village, the beaches have no bar, toilets or shade.

  • Playa de La Francesa: in the south-west, sheltered, with small waves and a lagoon at high tide. The swimming beach above all others, and so the busiest: this is where the catamarans anchor. A study by the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (2019) put its capacity at about 108 people against around 250 a day arriving by boat alone.
  • Playa de La Cocina: below Montaña Amarilla, a 10–15 minute walk beyond La Francesa. Bikes and taxis cannot get there, which is why it is much emptier.
  • Montaña Amarilla: the beach area at the foot of the cone, about 6 km from the village; combine it with the two above on the same outing.
  • Playa de Las Conchas: in the north-west, below Montaña Bermeja and facing Montaña Clara. It is the brochure photo and not a swimming beach: Biosfera Express warns of its heavy surf and dangerous currents. Look at it, walk along the shoreline and swim in the south.
  • La Laja: the village beach, next to the port, calm and with restaurants alongside. The one for small children (more ideas in Lanzarote with kids).
  • El Salado, Playa del Ámbar and Lambra: El Salado, east of the village, next to the campsite; Ámbar and Lambra, in the north, along tracks. Ámbar also has strong currents.

For comparison, see the beaches of Lanzarote.

Chinijo Archipelago Nature Park and marine reserve

These are two separate designations that overlap:

  • The Parque Natural del Archipiélago Chinijo (Chinijo Archipelago Nature Park) covers 46,263 ha (37,151 of sea and 9,112 of land) and includes La Graciosa, Alegranza, Montaña Clara, the Roque del Este and Roque del Oeste and the Risco de Famara.
  • The Reserva Marina de la Isla Graciosa e Islotes del Norte de Lanzarote is a fisheries reserve created in 1995 by the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and the Canary Islands Government, covering about 70,000 ha. Lanzarote's tourist office presents it as the largest marine reserve in Europe. Around the Roque del Este there is a one-nautical-mile no-take zone where nobody may fish or enter without scientific authorisation.

According to the same tourist office, between 7,500 and 10,000 pairs of Cory's shearwater breed here. It is all part of the Lanzarote and Chinijo Archipelago UNESCO Global Geopark. In practice: stay on the tracks and take your rubbish with you. Camping is only allowed at El Salado, with showers and toilets and a free permit obtained in advance from Parques Nacionales; fires are banned.

What to do on La Graciosa in a day

A plan for people arriving by car who want an unhurried swimming beach. From 27 October, Biosfera's 18:30 return gives you an hour and a half more than Romero's last boat.

A day on La Graciosa

  1. Ferry between 08:30 and 10:00: cooler, and La Francesa is emptier.
  2. Hire a bike in Caleta de Sebo (electric if you are not fit) and buy water.
  3. Cycle to La Francesa (about 45 min) for your first swim.
  4. Leave the bike and walk 10–15 min to La Cocina for the middle of the day.
  5. Head back to Caleta de Sebo for lunch: there is nowhere to eat outside the village.
  6. In the afternoon, swim at La Laja or, if there are three or more of you, take the north-island taxi loop to see Las Conchas and Pedro Barba.
  7. Last boat with your operator: 18:30 with Biosfera; with Romero, 19:00 in summer and 17:00 from 27 October.

With a free afternoon back in Lanzarote, César Manrique's Mirador del Río (€9) looks down on El Río and La Graciosa from the top of the Risco de Famara: it is in what to see in the north of Lanzarote. And LavaFly includes La Graciosa among its flying areas for paragliding, wind permitting.

Where to eat on La Graciosa

Restaurants, bars and shops are all in Caleta de Sebo, several of them by La Laja beach. At La Francesa, La Cocina or Las Conchas there is nowhere to eat or buy water: bring it from the village. Teguise Town Council also runs a market on La Graciosa, open daily from 10:00 to 18:00. If you would rather not think about it, the catamarans include lunch on board.

You can go all year round: the sea is around 18 °C in February and March and 23 °C in September, the month of the roughly 2.6 km open-water swim across El Río. Month-by-month forecast in Lanzarote weather.
