Watching the sunset in Lanzarote from a boat is easy: two hours at sea, a drink in your hand and the south coast in silhouette. There are three shared trips that genuinely deliver, two private boats, and one fact few listings mention: from Puerto del Carmen the sun doesn't set into the sea, but behind the Los Ajaches hills.

Sunset times in Lanzarote, month by month

Lanzarote is on the same time as the UK, one hour behind mainland Spain. The sun sets around 18:00 in December and around 21:00 in June and July. On the last Sunday in October the clocks go back and sunset suddenly comes an hour earlier.

Canary time in mid-month, calculated for the centre of the island. In Playa Blanca and El Golfo the sun sets a few minutes later.

Which side of the island: Puerto del Carmen or Playa Blanca

Sunset cruises leave from Puerto del Carmen and Puerto Calero, on the south-east coast. From there the sun sets behind land: H2O itself describes its sunset catamaran as a trip to watch the sun go down behind the Los Ajaches massif. It's lovely, with the mountains silhouetted against the light, but it isn't the sun-over-the-sea horizon you see in the photos.

The sun sets towards the west-south-west in December, due west in March and September, and towards the west-north-west in June. Geographically, in winter the coast at Playa Blanca and Marina Rubicón, which faces south with open sea to the south-west, is better placed to watch the sun drop into the water. No shared sunset trip leaves from there; if you're staying in Playa Blanca, a stroll along the seafront at the end of the day gives you that view for free. More ideas in our Playa Blanca guide.

Lanzarote Sea Tours goes out on the Biosfera Jet, a fast boat with around 50 seats: the same trip on GetYourGuide also scores 4.2. Senda Eco Way is the dearest of the shared trips and the best rated (4.7): a quiet 14 m electric catamaran with a maximum of 12 passengers.

Cava, mojito or champagne: what's served on board

If you're after a "sunset cruise with cava", read each boat's listing, because each one serves something different. Romero gives you a welcome mojito, something to nibble and one more drink (beer, sangria, water or a soft drink); it isn't an open bar. Lanzarote Sea Tours serves cava and pastries, but on a speedboat, not a catamaran. H2O's private catamaran carries cava, cheese, ham and papas (Canarian potatoes). None of the shared trips is a dinner cruise: eat beforehand or book a table at the harbour for afterwards.

If the drink and the view are what matter, there's an alternative on land: a sunset tour with cava and a guide, 4.5 hours, from €64. Check the listing for the route and where you toast; on your own, the coast at El Golfo faces west.

Sunset with dolphins: what to expect

Almost every sunset cruise is advertised "with dolphins". Bottlenose dolphins are present all year off Lanzarote's east coast, but no company guarantees them. One local agency talks of sightings on around 60 % of trips; another of almost 100 %, though "never guaranteed". Treat them as a bonus if they appear, not the reason for the trip.

The rules are clear: boats may not come within 60 m of the animals, and swimming with wild dolphins is prohibited. Lanzarote Sea Tours' Biosfera Jet is on the Canary Islands Government's official list of boats licensed for cetacean watching; those boats fly the yellow "Barco Azul" (Blue Boat) flag. If dolphins are your priority, you're better off on a dedicated trip in a small boat: it's all in dolphin watching in Lanzarote.

Private sunset boat: when it works out cheaper

For a large group, a private boat can cost less than individual seats. Twelve seats on Romero's cruise come to €636; H2O's private sunset catamaran costs from €500 for up to 12 people, about €42 a head, with cava and snacks. Catlanza offers the same on a sailing boat from Puerto Calero, also from €500.

For a special occasion, there's a private yacht with barbecue and sunset at Papagayo from €950 per group. For a proposal or a celebration for two, see also Lanzarote for couples.

Sunset without a boat: Famara, El Golfo and the vineyards

You don't need to get on a boat. The island's tourist office recommends Famara beach when low tide coincides with sunset; it's free, you just need to check the tide table. The west coast, from Los Hervideros to El Golfo, faces the Atlantic. And if you'd rather have wine, there's a sunset vineyard walk with a tasting from €26; the island's wineries are covered in La Geria.

How to book and what happens if there's a swell

Romero, Lanzarote Sea Tours and H2O all allow free cancellation up to 24 hours before; H2O warns that it may call off the trip depending on the sea. If they cancel because of the weather, Lanzarote Sea Tours refunds you or changes the date. Always ask for the cancellation in writing if you booked through a platform. If you get seasick, the catamaran moves less than the speedboat. The ferry company in depth: Líneas Romero. More options in Lanzarote boat trips and the sea forecast in Lanzarote weather.
