Líneas Romero reviews: its ferries and boat excursions

Líneas Romero is the family-run ferry company linking Lanzarote with La Graciosa (€29 return) and with Fuerteventura (€39, the cheapest foot-passenger crossing), and it also sells boat excursions. A good choice, with two bits of small print: cancellation and the last boat.

Líneas Romero, with ferries to La Graciosa and Fuerteventura and its own range of excursions, is overall a safe buy: published prices, new boats and the same price on its website as on the platforms. Two things are worth checking before you pay: a scheduled-route ticket cancelled less than 24 hours ahead is charged in full, and a return ticket ties you to its boats and its last departure.

For

  • Same price on its website as on GetYourGuide, Civitatis or Viator.
  • Bikes, surfboards and pets travel free.
  • Open ticket: if you miss a boat, you catch the next one.
  • Its own car park in Órzola for customers with a return ticket.

Against

  • Cancel less than 24 h ahead on the scheduled routes = you pay the full fare.
  • From 27 October the last boat from La Graciosa leaves at 17:00.
  • Only five crossings a day to Fuerteventura, and no cars.
  • On the guided excursion to Fuerteventura there are complaints about the shopping stop and the short beach time.

What Líneas Romero offers

It started in 1930 as La Graciosa's mail boat and is still a local family business. Today it has four lines of business:

  • Órzola – La Graciosa ferry, about 25 minutes to Caleta de Sebo. It competes with Biosfera Express at the same price.
  • Playa Blanca – Corralejo ferry (Fuerteventura), foot passengers only, about 30 minutes.
  • Water buses: Playa Blanca – Marina Rubicón and Puerto del Carmen – Puerto Calero, €11 one way and €18 return (children €8 and €12).
  • Excursions, most with coach pick-up: La Graciosa, Fuerteventura, Lobos, Papagayo and sunset (also under the Videocosta brand).

The scheduled fleet is four 350-seat ferries (Juan Jorge R, Luis R, Alexandro R and Don Juan R) and two 250-seat ones; the excursions run on catamarans with 100 to 200 seats.

Ferry to Fuerteventura: the cheapest on foot

From Playa Blanca to Corralejo, Romero charges €20.50 one way and €39 return (children €11 and €21), less than Baleària, which starts at €31 one way. The trade-off is that there are only five boats each way. From Playa Blanca: 09:30, 11:15, 12:45, 16:30 and 18:30. From Corralejo: 10:30, 12:00, 13:30, 17:30 and 19:30. It does not carry cars: if you want to cross with yours, the option is Fred. Olsen or Baleària.

Excursions: prices and which are worth it

Excursion Duration Adult / child
La Graciosa at your own pace (coach + ferry) about 5 h €40 / €29
I Love La Graciosa (catamaran, lunch, kayak) about 6 h €66 / €45
Encantos del Norte (LagOmar, La Graciosa, Mirador del Río) about 7 h €79 / €48
Fuerteventura at your own pace (coach + ferry) about 8 h €45 / €30
Encantos de Fuerteventura (guided) about 8 h €62 / €40
Lobos at your own pace about 8 h €59 / €38
Mini-cruise to Papagayo from Playa Blanca 2 h €35 / €25
I Love Papagayo (catamaran from Puerto del Carmen) 4 h €66 / €45

Our take: the I Love La Graciosa catamaran is its most-reviewed excursion (4.6 from more than 2,100 on GetYourGuide) and the one that makes most sense if you do not want to organise anything. The guided Fuerteventura excursion is the weakest in reviews; the at your own pace version costs €17 less and gives you more beach time. For Lobos you need a free permit from the Cabildo (island council) of Fuerteventura at https://lobospass.com/; more in our guide to Fuerteventura and Lobos. The €35 mini-cruise is the cheapest way to see Papagayo from the sea (see boat trips).

Price on its website and on the platforms

Romero sells at the same fare on every channel. The La Graciosa ferry costs €29 on its website, on GetYourGuide, Viator, Civitatis and Tiqets. The catamaran with lunch is €66 on its website, GetYourGuide and Viator. The guided Fuerteventura excursion is €62 on its website, GetYourGuide, Viator and Civitatis. On GetYourGuide the Fuerteventura ferry ticket appears from €19.50, almost the same as the €20.50 on the website.

Buying on its website is only worth it if you are a Canary Islands resident (75% discount) or hold a Spanish large-family card (20% or 50%).

Traveller reviews

On Tripadvisor, Líneas Romero averages 4.2 out of 5 from more than 1,600 reviews. On GetYourGuide the La Graciosa ferry scores 4.7 out of 5 (more than 1,100 reviews), the catamaran with lunch 4.6 (more than 2,100) and the guided Fuerteventura excursion 4.2 (more than 1,000). On Civitatis that same excursion drops to 7.2 out of 10.

In its favour people repeatedly mention value for money, friendly crew, punctual coaches and the guides. Against: the food on the catamarans, crowded boats, rough crossings on some days and, on the Fuerteventura excursion, a shopping stop and barely an hour on the beach. When there is a coastal weather warning, Romero and Biosfera change or cancel sailings to La Graciosa.
