The ferry from Lanzarote to Fuerteventura is short and easy, and the choice comes down to one question: are you taking a car? On foot, Líneas Romero is the cheapest option with a published price. With a car, Fred. Olsen Express wins on frequency and on the Bocayna Express's 25-minute crossing. Baleària Canarias is the alternative with a car, with fewer sailings.

For

  • Short crossing: between 25 and 35 minutes.
  • Plenty of sailings a day if you add the three companies together.
  • A cheap foot-passenger option with a clear price (Romero).
  • Open ticket with Romero: if you miss a boat, you catch the next one.

Against

  • Every return ticket ties you to the company that sells it.
  • With a hire car you need the rental company's permission.
  • Fred. Olsen and Baleària do not publish the non-resident fare outside the booking search.
  • The channel between the two islands is open sea: some days it gets rough.

Fred. Olsen Express: the fastest, with the most sailings

Fred. Olsen Express is the Canary fast-ferry company founded in 1974 and owned by the Norwegian Olsen family. On this route it runs two boats: the Bocayna Express, which carries cars and is the only one that crosses in 25 minutes, and the Buganvilla Express, foot passengers only, which takes 35. With up to 12 daily sailings, the first at around 06:15, it is the easiest to fit into any plan.

It sells three fare types: Basic, Optimal and Comfort (the last with a VIP lounge, drinks and food). Changes are free and refunds only exist on the higher fares. On board there is a café and free wifi; you carry your own luggage, up to 20 kg, with trolleys at €1. For pets it offers a carrier, a sofa next to your seat or a kennel, booked in advance.

Reviews: 4.0 out of 5 on Trustpilot from more than 130 reviews and 4.0 on the Tripadvisor listing for Playa Blanca. Recurring praise is for the fast, clean boats and helpful crew; complaints concern the price for non-residents and glitches on the website or app when booking.

Baleària Canarias: formerly Naviera Armas

If you search for "Naviera Armas", you will no longer find it under that name: Baleària bought its Canary Islands business and the routes now run as Baleària Canarias, with the same boats, many still called "Volcán de…". Some comparison sites still list it as Armas. On this route the Volcán de Tindaya sails: about 35 minutes, from €31 one way for non-residents, up to 7 sailings Monday to Friday and 6 at weekends. Boarding closes 25 minutes before.

Naviera Armas's poor Tripadvisor scores (1.8 out of 5 on its Las Palmas listing) date from before the change of ownership and relate to long routes; under the new brand there are still too few reviews to judge. Armas loyalty-scheme points carry over to Baleària Club. Bookings at https://www.baleariacanarias.com/en/routes-timetables/ferry-lanzarote-fuerteventura.

Líneas Romero: the cheapest on foot

Romero does not carry cars, but on foot it is the clearest option: €20.50 one way and €39 return (children €11 and €21). It runs five sailings each way:

  • From Playa Blanca: 09:30, 11:15, 12:45, 16:30 and 18:30.
  • From Corralejo: 10:30, 12:00, 13:30, 17:30 and 19:30.

The ticket is open (if you miss a boat, you catch the next one), but if you cancel less than 24 hours ahead you pay 100%. With a Romero return, your last boat is the 19:30. Full review in Líneas Romero.

Ferry prices on the platforms

On GetYourGuide, the Romero ticket appears from €19.50, almost the same as on its website. There is another ferry ticket from €21 (five sailings, about 35 minutes) where the platform does not show the operator; check before paying if you want a particular boat.

If you want to spend the day in Fuerteventura without organising anything, Romero sells packages with a coach from your hotel: Fuerteventura at your own pace for €45 (09:30 ferry out, back on the 17:30) or the guided excursion for €62, lunch not included. The guided one costs the same on its website, on GetYourGuide and on Civitatis. The at-your-own-pace version gives more beach time; on the guided one, travellers complain of barely an hour on the beach. The whole plan, with Corralejo, the dunes and Lobos, is in our guide to Fuerteventura from Lanzarote.

With a hire car: what you need to know

Only Fred. Olsen (Bocayna Express) and Baleària carry vehicles. Before booking:

  • Ask the rental company for written permission. Baleària only takes a hire car on board if the contract allows it, and some companies do not let the car leave the island.
  • Fred. Olsen lets you book without knowing the registration number: you state it is a hire car and give the number at least one hour before departure.
  • Fred. Olsen has packages with discounts of up to 60% for 2 to 5 people travelling with a vehicle.
  • Arrive 40 minutes early with a car for Fred. Olsen and 25 minutes early for Baleària.

For a single day, going on foot is cheaper and simpler, and if you do not want to drive in Fuerteventura there are excursions by coach.
