Jameos del Agua was the first centre César Manrique built in Lanzarote: you go down into a volcanic cave, walk past a seawater lake with tiny white crabs and come out at a white pool surrounded by garden, all inside a collapsed lava tube. The ticket costs €17 and has no time slot, which makes it the perfect flexible piece to fit around the Cueva de los Verdes, 1 km away, which does require a slot.

What is Jameos del Agua

It is a section of the lava tube from the La Corona volcano. The CACT, who run the centre, date its formation to around 5,000 years ago. "Jameo" is a word of Guanche origin for the hole that opens when the roof of a lava tube collapses: there are several here, and Manrique turned them into a route.

The centre opened in 1968 and the work was completed in 1977. Although it is linked with Manrique, it was a team effort: the artist Jesús Soto worked with him, along with the island's craftsmen, technicians and labourers. Even the furniture was designed for the site, and you will see fishing buoys and pots turned into lamps and planters. The area is protected as the Los Jameos Site of Scientific Interest.

The rest of his work, with prices, is in our César Manrique guide.

General entry costs €17 for adults and €8.50 for ages 7 to 12; under-7s go free. With the Casa de los Volcanes, the museum inside the centre itself, it rises to €22.40 (€11.20 child). That is only €5.40 more.

Reduced rates (for those who qualify):

  • Canary Islands residents: €13.60 (€6.80 child); €17.90 with the museum.
  • Lanzarote residents: €2 (€3 with the museum). If you are visiting family who live on the island, they need to bring their DNI or paper registration certificate.
  • People with disabilities: €11.90 (€5.95 child).

They only apply with the physical document, cannot be combined, and a reduced ticket without proof is cancelled with no refund.

There is no joint CACT pass: this is the only combination. The five big centres (Timanfaya, Jameos, Cueva, Mirador del Río and Jardín de Cactus) add up to €82 per adult. We explain it in our CACT review.

Jameos del Agua opening times

It is open every day of the year from 10:00 to 18:00, but last entry is at 17:15: turn up at 17:30 counting on the closing time and you will be left outside. Allow one to two hours for the route and another hour if you add the museum.

Check the tide table before you go. The lake fills with seawater that seeps through cracks, and its level rises and falls with the tide: on spring tides it can cover the walkway and you will have to take your shoes off to cross.

What to see: the lake, the blind crabs and the pool

The route always runs in the same order:

  1. Jameo Chico. You go down into the first cavity, where the restaurant is.
  2. The inner lake. Seawater under the rock; the little white dots on the bottom are the crabs.
  3. The walkway along the lake to the other mouth of the tube.
  4. Jameo Grande. The famous photo: white pool, leaning palm and garden, open to the sky.
  5. The auditorium, at the end of the route.

Behind the restaurant you can see one of the openings of the Túnel de la Atlántida, the stretch of the tube that continues under the sea.

The albino crabs

Munidopsis polymorpha is an endemic crab, blind and albino, adapted to the darkness of the lake. It measures 2–3 cm, so do not expect anything spectacular: they are white specks on dark rock, and the longer you look, the more you see. Islanders call them "jameitos".

The auditorium and concerts

The auditorium fills a natural volcanic chamber and the seats follow the slope of the rock. At the entrance hangs a lamp of metal rods that recalls Leonardo's drawings for De divina proportione. The general visit takes you as far as the auditorium; going inside and seeing what lies behind the stage is reserved for the Insólita visit (see below).

Noches de Jameos, on Fridays

The usual way to hear music here is the Noches de Jameos (Jameos nights), every Friday of the year: it includes a self-guided evening visit (around an hour, before or after dinner), dinner in the restaurant and a concert by the lake:

  • Set menu: €98 per person; vegan menu €88; children's menu €49 (age 7–12). Under-7s go free and eat à la carte.
  • Restaurant from 18:30 to 20:30; concert from 22:30 to 23:15. On those days Jameos closes at midnight.
  • Your table is held for 15 minutes.

Book at https://www.cactlanzarote.com/en/events/noches-de-jameos. For a couple it is a very different night out from the usual; for more ideas, see Lanzarote for couples.

The CACT also programme one-off concerts in the auditorium through the year (for example, 75 minutes of music for €30). The listings are at https://www.cactlanzarote.com/en/events.

Casa de los Volcanes and the Insólita visit

Casa de los Volcanes: is the combined ticket worth it?

The Casa de los Volcanes is a museum within the Jameos complex, with immersive rooms and virtual reality on the La Corona tube, the Lanzarote and Chinijo Archipelago Geopark and "planetary analogues" (places on Earth that resemble other planets). It has a room devoted to César Manrique, created with the César Manrique Foundation. Allow about 60 minutes.

Our view: for €5.40 more, yes; it helps you understand what you have just walked through. If you are short of time or with small children who are already tired, skip it.

At the moment general entry also includes a temporary exhibition of photos by José María Barreto, "Timanfaya, art created by the volcano"; exhibitions change, so check the listings at https://www.cactlanzarote.com/en/events.

The Insólita visit

The Insólita Jameos del Agua is a small-group guided visit of about 2 hours that includes the Casa de los Volcanes and what the standard ticket does not show:

  • the inside of the auditorium;
  • the Jameo de la Cazuela, behind the stage, with two indoor waterfalls (only seen on this visit);
  • the view of the Túnel de la Atlántida;
  • a Lanzarote wine tasting in the Bar Galería at the end.

It runs Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 09:45, before opening to the public, in Spanish and English. It costs €46.97 per adult and €23.48 for ages 7 to 12 (Canary residents €32.83). Book at https://ventaonline.cactlanzarote.com/en/experiences/insolita-jameos-del-agua-ticket. It is for people who already know Jameos or want to see it without the crowds; on a first visit, the ticket with the museum (€22.40) gives more for your money.

Jameos del Agua restaurant

The restaurant is in the Jameo Chico, beside the lake. The menu leans on local cooking: tortilla conejera, cherne (wreckfish) with mojo, papas arrugadas (wrinkled potatoes). At lunchtime you cannot book a table. The CACT publish neither kitchen hours nor guide prices, so if you are counting on eating here, ask at the ticket office on the way in.

There are two quicker options: the Vista Lago café-bar beside the lake, and the Bar Galería at the end of the route. You cannot bring in outside food or drink.

How to get to Jameos del Agua

Jameos is on the road from Arrieta to Órzola, in the municipality of Haría, on the north-east coast. Parking is free, for cars and bikes.

Driving time without traffic, calculated with OSRM on OpenStreetMap. Add 20–30 % in summer and at rush hour; at Timanfaya the queue of cars at the gate can add a lot more.

By car

The easiest way: you can link Jameos with the Cueva, the Mirador del Río and a swim at Arrieta or the natural pools of Punta Mujeres. In summer the access road to the Cueva (LZ-205) is one-way and the CACT recommend approaching via Jameos, so it makes sense to do this centre first or drive past it on your way to the cave.

By bus (line 9)

Line 9 Arrecife–Órzola has a "Jameos del Agua" stop, but not every departure stops there:

How to get there by guagua (bus)

  1. Go to Arrecife bus station: line 9 does not run through Costa Teguise or Puerto del Carmen, so you first need to get to Arrecife.
  2. Take the 10:15 departure (arrives at Jameos at 11:00) or the 11:30 (arrives at 12:15). The 07:20 and 17:00 do not stop at Jameos.
  3. The 15:30 arrives at 16:15, but the last return bus that stops at Jameos leaves at 16:47: you would have barely half an hour. Rule it out.
  4. To return to Arrecife, buses leave Jameos at 11:47, 13:17 and 16:47. With the 10:15 out and the 13:17 back you have a good two hours.

Check the timetables at https://arrecifebus.com/lineas/9-arrecife-orzola/ before setting off, especially at weekends and on public holidays. More tips for getting around by bus in Lanzarote without a car.

Jameos del Agua and Cueva de los Verdes: how to combine them

They are two sections of the same lava tube, 1 km apart, and almost everyone visits them on the same day. The key is the order in which you buy:

  1. Book the Cueva de los Verdes first. It is sold online only, for a specific day and time, and has no ticket office. It is the only thing in the north with a fixed time.
  2. Then buy Jameos, which has no time slot, and fit it in before or after.

A typical day by car: the Cueva first thing (it opens at 09:30), Jameos mid-morning with lunch there and, in the afternoon, the Mirador del Río (€9, last entry 16:40) or the Jardín de Cactus (€9, last entry 16:30), both of which close earlier than Jameos.

If you have a spare day, the Líneas Romero and Biosfera Express ferries leave Órzola for La Graciosa; but do not try to squeeze the island and both caves into the same day.

For two or more people with a car, going on your own is clearly cheaper: the two caves come to €34 in tickets. The tour makes sense if you are travelling alone, do not drive or do not want to wrestle with booking the Cueva. Before comparing it with other excursions in Lanzarote, check whether tickets are included; how booking and cancelling work on this platform is covered in our GetYourGuide review.

Practical tips and rules

  • No pushchairs. Bring a baby carrier and leave the pushchair in the car. There is a baby-changing area in the toilets outside. More ideas for families in Lanzarote with kids.
  • Limited accessibility. Changes in level and stone floors; the stairlift in the auditorium only works during events and does not make the route accessible.
  • Comfortable shoes for the volcanic stone, and sun protection in summer: the Jameo Grande is open to the sky.
  • Photos yes, drones no.
  • No pets, except assistance dogs.
  • There is free wifi in the centre.
