Rancho Texas Lanzarote Park reviews: the Wild West zoo under scrutiny

Rancho Texas is Lanzarote's best-rated family park on Tiqets and packs a lot into a €45 ticket: zoo, shows and a heated water park. The drawback that weighs with many people: its dolphins, sea lions and big cats live in captivity.

Our view of Rancho Texas Lanzarote Park in one sentence: as a full family day out it gives a lot for the money, as long as you are comfortable with a zoo that keeps dolphins in a pool. On this page we review the business (prices, terms, service, the animal debate); show times, the list of animals and how to get there are in the Rancho Texas guide.

Who is behind Rancho Texas

The park belongs to Revoco de la Triguera S.L., based on the site itself in Puerto del Carmen (municipality of Tías); Tiqets sells it with the same supplier. The Wild West theme is no accident: the park commemorates the 55 Canary Islanders, 43 of them from Lanzarote, who founded San Antonio (Texas) in 1731.

It has no connection with Aquapark Costa Teguise or Aqualava. Its water area is called Aqua Rancho and is inside the park.

What Rancho Texas offers

The ticket includes the zoo, the 15–20-minute presentations (dolphins at 11:30 and 13:45 all year, sea lions, birds of prey, macaws and cockatoos) and Aqua Rancho, with eight slides and pools heated by geothermal and solar energy. The slides open from 12:30 to 17:00, so the sensible plan is animals in the morning and swimming in the afternoon.

Paid extras:

  • Dolphin encounter and sea lion encounter, in the water, and Trainer for a day, with a behind-the-scenes visit. Book ahead in July and August.
  • Country Night, Tuesdays and Fridays from about 18:30 to 22:45: barbecue, unlimited beer, sangria and soft drinks, a parade, dancing, a lasso and whip show, and pony rides for children. Resellers advertise it at about €62 adult and €40 child; the official price appears only when booking.

The dolphins and the animal debate

The dolphins at Rancho Texas are bottlenose dolphins in captivity; according to resellers, four of them, which arrived in 2016 from Duisburg and Nuremberg zoos. The "encounter" the park sells is not swimming with dolphins: it is standing in a pool, with the water roughly at waist height, next to trained dolphins. Resellers sell it at about €195 adult and €180 child with entry included, from 110 cm tall and age 6 or 7 depending on the seller. Confirm the conditions in the official shop.

Spanish law allows dolphins in licensed zoos, and organisations such as PACMA and Mares No Muros are calling for dolphinariums to be banned. Among visitors, some come back delighted with how the keepers treat the animals, and others consider the encounter money wasted or leave uneasy at seeing dolphins in pools.

If you want to see dolphins in the wild, the alternative is a licensed boat trip; see the dolphin watching guide. At sea, swimming within 60 metres of wild dolphins is prohibited.

What travellers say about Rancho Texas

At 4.7 out of 5 on Tiqets, it is the highest-rated family park in Lanzarote on that platform. On Tripadvisor the recurring points are that the grounds are well kept, the dolphin and sea lion presentations are very popular, the shows are watched in the shade, the keepers treat the animals well, and the included water park makes the price worthwhile.

The criticisms come back again and again too: small enclosures for the big cats and the bison, unease at dolphins in a pool, encounters some feel are not worth it, and summer crowds. According to the park itself, the busiest days are Mondays and Thursdays in July and August.

  4. Encounters are booked separately, and ahead of time in summer.
  5. Pay by card, Bizum, PayPal, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
