Teguise Market (the "mercadillo") is Lanzarote's big Sunday market, organised by Teguise town council, which calls it "the most important popular market in the Canary Islands". Our view: it is worth a Sunday morning, above all for the town, as long as you arrive before the coaches and do not expect only local crafts.

For

  • Free and every Sunday of the year.
  • Special buses every half hour from Costa Teguise and Puerto del Carmen.
  • A good excuse to see the island's former capital.
  • Island produce: cheeses, wines, aloe, pottery, basketry.

Against

  • From 10:30 it is hard to move between the stalls.
  • Lots of souvenirs you will find in any beach shop.
  • Heat in the shadeless streets at midday.
  • From Playa Blanca there is only one bus there and one back.

What it is and who runs it

The market began in 1985 with about 20 stalls in the Plaza de los Leones. It is held by Teguise town council, which recently started contracting out its organisation (transport, signage, cleaning, first aid and entertainment) to a company through a tender, together with the markets in Costa Teguise and La Graciosa.

The stall count changes depending on who gives it and when: the council has spoken of more than 400, more than 450 and, in its most recent note, more than 350 active stalls each Sunday. Expect 350–450 stalls. The tourism website says it is one of the largest markets in Europe; that is a promotional line, not a measured figure.

What is on sale

The council lists crafts of every kind, pottery, basketry, leather goods, cheeses, wines, cactus and aloe products and work by artists. There are also clothes, textiles, organic products, traditional food, souvenirs and Canarian music and dance performances.

Teguise Market opening hours and the best time to go

It runs from 09:00 to 14:00, Sundays only. There is no market in the Villa on any other day. According to local guides, excursion coaches start arriving around 10:30, and from 11:00 the most visible stalls raise their prices; it is best to be there before 09:30–10:00.

The council itself advises seeing the town from Monday to Friday and saving Sunday for the market. If the Villa interests you (church, Palacio Spínola, Castillo de Santa Bárbara with the Piracy Museum), come back another day; we cover it in northern Lanzarote.

How to get to Teguise Market

By bus

Intercity Bus Lanzarote runs special guagua (bus) lines on Sundays only:

14 Arrecife Outbound on line 7 (every 2 h from 08:00) 15:30 to Arrecife bus station

If you are staying in Playa Blanca, the 13:30 bus is the only one back: miss it and you will need a taxi. Timetables and notices at arrecifebus.com; more options in Lanzarote without a car.

By car, and where to park

On Sundays the private plots around the town charge for parking. The council regularised the market's 14 car parks years ago but does not publish their prices. The free spaces on the outskirts fill up around 10:30.

Driving time without traffic, calculated with OSRM on OpenStreetMap. Add 20–30 % in summer and at rush hour; at Timanfaya the queue of cars at the gate can add a lot more.

On an excursion or transfer

If you do not want to drive or check timetables, there are transfers with pick-up:

On Viator, the market plus La Graciosa combination costs the same, €65, but with a lower rating (3.9 from 78). Local company First Minute sells the market transfer for €15 on its own website. From Costa Teguise or Puerto del Carmen, the special bus does the same job without a group schedule.

What travellers say

Blogs and travel guides keep repeating four points: big crowds mid-morning, the excursion coaches, the mix of genuine crafts with mass-produced souvenirs, and the heat. GetYourGuide's best-selling transfer is rated 4.1 out of 5; the combination with LagOmar, 4.6.

There are no official warnings or recent news reports about theft. The usual crowd rules apply: rucksack on your front and phone in a closed pocket. The council has security plans, support staff and first aid on Sundays.

Alternatives and other markets

  • Haría, Saturdays 09:00 to 14:30 in the Plaza León y Castillo: crafts and organic produce, smaller and quieter. Combine it with the Mirador del Río.
  • Costa Teguise, Pueblo Marinero: Tuesdays 09:00 to 14:00 (farmers' market), Wednesdays 18:00 to 22:00 (craft evening market) and Fridays 17:00 to 22:00. More in Costa Teguise.
  • Marina Rubicón, Wednesdays and Saturdays 09:00 to 14:00, in Playa Blanca.
  • Puerto del Carmen, Fridays 09:00 to 14:00 at El Varadero; see Puerto del Carmen.
  • Arrecife, Saturdays 09:00 to 12:00 in the Plaza de Las Palmas.
  • La Graciosa, a daily market from 10:00 to 18:00 in Caleta de Sebo.

After the market, the bars in the Villa have live music on Sunday afternoons. Another option is to head down to Famara for sunset at low tide: line 31 runs back to Costa Teguise until 19:30. For more ideas, see things to do in Lanzarote.
