The César Manrique Foundation explains Manrique better than any other visit on the island: it is not a tourist centre he designed, it is his home, built on a lava flow and lived in for twenty years. We recommend it without reservation; just arrive knowing that there is no left-luggage, no refunds, and that every coach excursion stops here.
Verdict
4.4/ 5
One of Lanzarote's essential visits at a fair price: €10 for the Tahíche house and €17 if you add the one in Haría. It is a private foundation funded by tickets and its shop, and the care taken over the place shows it. It loses points for the no-refund policy, the lack of a left-luggage room and only partial accessibility.

What the César Manrique Foundation is
It is a private, non-profit cultural foundation that Manrique set up himself in 1983 and that began operating in 1992, the year he died. It is based in his former home in the Taro de Tahíche and works in four areas: Manrique's own work, visual arts, environment and land, and cultural debate. It publishes books and runs temporary exhibitions and talks, all free. It is funded mainly by tickets to its museums and sales of products with Manrique's designs.
What it is not: one of the Cabildo's (island council's) CACT centres. It shares no ticket with Jameos del Agua, the Cueva de los Verdes or the rest. The only link is the room devoted to Manrique in the Casa de los Volcanes at Jameos del Agua. If you want to know how the council's tickets work, read our CACT review.
What you will see: the two houses
The Foundation, in Tahíche
Manrique lived here from 1968 to 1988, twenty years, the longest he spent in any one house. He built it on lava from the 1730–1736 eruptions: above ground, a 3,000 m² house on a 30,000 m² plot; below, five volcanic bubbles joined by lava tunnels, with a swimming pool, a small dance floor and an oven. His old studio is now a gallery of his paintings. He died in 1992 in a road accident as he drove out of here.
Hours: 10:00 to 17:30, with the ticket office open until 17:00. Guided excursions spend about 45 minutes here. It closes only on 1 January.
The House-Museum, in Haría
A ruined farmhouse in the Haría palm grove that Manrique rebuilt from 1986 and where he lived until his death. It opened to the public in 2013 and the studio remains as he left it: this is the most personal side of Manrique. Hours: 10:30 to 17:30, ticket office until 17:00. Combine it with the rest of northern Lanzarote.

- €10 per adult at each house; children aged 7 to 12, €3.
- Combined ticket for both houses: €17 (children €4). You save €3 per adult and €2 per child. It is the only combined Manrique ticket on the island: the CACT do not sell a pass.
- Groups of 20 or more: reduced rate with one day's notice (https://fcmanrique.org/servicios/visitas-en-grupo/, grupos@fcmanrique.org).
- Residents (Canary residents only): the Foundation lists the documents that prove residence, but not the price. Ask at the ticket office with an original DNI, or a passport plus residence certificate.
Direct or on an excursion
The Foundation sells the stand-alone ticket; the platforms sell excursions that include it. GetYourGuide's full-day tour (from €85, rated 4.6 out of 5 from more than 450 reviews) spends about 45 guided minutes at the Foundation and also takes in the Campesino monument, the Mirador del Río, the Jardín de Cactus and Jameos. On Civitatis an equivalent tour costs €85 and includes tickets worth €45 at adult prices. With a car and two people, going independently works out a good deal cheaper; without a car and travelling alone, the tour pays off.

Getting there by bus
Line 7 Arrecife–Máguez leaves Arrecife at 08:00, 10:00, 17:10 and 22:30 and stops at "Cruce César Manrique", in Tahíche, 11 minutes later. The same guagua (bus) continues to Nazaret, home of the LagOmar Museum, then to the Jardín de Cactus and Haría's main square. With the 08:00 or 10:00 departure you can do a Manrique day without a car. The walking distance from the stop to the entrance is not published: check it on a map beforehand. More routes in our guide to Lanzarote without a car.
What travellers say
The Foundation is a fixed stop on the Manrique excursions, and those excursions score highly: 4.6 out of 5 for both the full-day tour and the guided Manrique legacy tour on GetYourGuide, with hundreds of reviews. The short tour combining Teguise market with the Foundation drops to 4.3. Our practical advice: arrive at 10:00, before the excursion groups turn up.

- Manrique's public works (Jameos, Mirador, Cactus) are run by the Cabildo: see CACT and Jameos del Agua.
- The LagOmar Museum, in Nazaret a few minutes away, is another house carved into the rock with Manrique's influence, though private and unconnected to the Foundation.
- To compare platforms before booking, read our reviews of GetYourGuide and Civitatis.
